Complex systems are high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems with intricate interactions among their constituents. To make interpretable predictions about their large-scale behavior, it is typically assumed, without a clear statement, that these dynamics can be reduced to a few number of equations involving a low-rank matrix describing the network of interactions -- we call it the low-rank hypothesis. By leveraging fundamental theorems on singular value decomposition, we verify the hypothesis for various random network models, either by making explicit their low-rank formulation or by demonstrating the exponential decrease of their singular values. More importantly, we validate the hypothesis experimentally for real networks by showing that their effective rank is considerably lower than their number of vertices. We then introduce a dimension reduction procedure for general dynamical systems on networks that yields optimal low-dimensional dynamics. Notably, we find that recurrent neural networks can be exactly reduced. We use our empirical and theoretical results on the low-rank hypothesis to shed light on the dimension reduction of nonlinear dynamics on real networks, from microbial, to neuronal, to epidemiological dynamics. Finally, we prove that higher-order interactions naturally emerge from the dimension reduction, thus providing theoretical insights into the origin of higher-order interactions in complex systems.

In this paper, we study the applicability of an early warning index while studying the transitions to complete and generalized synchronizations in the coupled oscillator models using an unconventional system parameter and the coupling strength as the required control parameters. The coupled oscillator models are widely used and well-documented for studying various aspects of nature. However, the early warning index used in this paper is an explicit function of the mutual information of the coupled oscillators and reaches two different values before the interacting oscillators yield complete and generalized synchronizations. The transitions to synchrony using the unconventional control parameter are associated with a transition to periodic dynamics of the individual oscillators from their initial chaotic dynamics. Besides, when we use the coupling strength as a control parameter, the interacting oscillator exhibits chaotic dynamics during the synchronizations. Our analysis mainly involves different examples of two low-dimensional oscillators. Finally, we extend our study to a network of interacting oscillators. The applicability of the early detection index is verified in all cases.
